Oil Change

For most cars and light trucks, Driver’s Edge recommends changing the oil and filter every three months or 3,000 miles (six months or 5,000 miles with full synthetic oil), whichever comes first.

We’ve all heard it said that your vehicle is the largest investment you will make other than the purchase of your home.  As such, it stands to reason that you would do as much as you could to maintain your vehicle, avoid unexpected repairs and extend the life of your investment as long as possible. Routine maintenance is key to keeping your vehicle running smoothly and oil changes are a major part of that.

At Driver’s Edge we think of your oil change and lube as a protection of your investment.  It is not just a “drain and fill” of your oil and a filter replacement.  It is an opportunity to let your trusted technician check the health of your vehicle.  If done consistently, it helps to keep you informed of needed repair…now or in the future.  It’s another way we like to help you save money over the life of your vehicle.

Q: How often should I have oil changes in my car or truck?

A: Often enough to protect the engine from premature wear and viscosity breakdown.

For most cars and light trucks, Driver’s Edge recommends changing the oil and filter every three months or 3,000 miles (six months or 5,000 miles with full synthetic oil), whichever comes first. Yet, you may wonder why most late model owner’s manuals say that except for “severe service” applications, the oil change interval can be safely stretched to once a year or every 7,500 miles or more – with filter changes at every other oil change.

The reason for this is that when auto makers make such recommendations, it is usually not for severe service conditions. After all, the auto makers themselves would be the ones who’d have to bear the warranty costs that would result should their maintenance recommendations prove inadequate. They make such recommendations based on “normal driving”. The severe service maintenance schedule in many owner’s manuals usually calls for oil and filter change intervals of three to six months.

“Severe Service” (as defined by the automakers) includes:

  • Making frequent short trips (less than five miles).
  • Making frequent short trips (less than ten miles) in below freezing weather.
  • Driving in hot weather stop-and-go traffic.
  • Extensive idling and/or low speed driving (taxi, police, delivery service, for example).
  • Driving at sustained high speeds during hot weather.
  • Towing a trailer.
  • Driving in areas with heavy dust (gravel roads, construction zones, for example).

The protective additives in motor oil don’t hold up as well under such driving conditions for several reasons. If the engine isn’t running long enough to get the oil hot, condensation and fuel vapors won’t boil off. The contaminants will accumulate in the crankcase leading to the formation of corrosive acids and sludge. Excessive idling and high temperatures from towing and high speed driving during hot weather can accelerate viscosity breakdown. In addition, exposure to dust can put dirt particles in the crankcase.

The filter also needs to be changed every time for two reasons. One is because today’s smaller oil filters don’t contain as much filter media as the older filters which means they can clog up sooner. The other is because the filter contains dirty oil that can contaminate the fresh oil added to the crankcase.

In conclusion, considering the cost of the oil and a filter, it’s probably better to change the oil a little more often than might be necessary than to risk not changing it enough.
